Collapse ▲During the week of July 14, Durham County 4-H youth participated in our annual Farm to Fork Camp, an immersive experience designed to connect young people with the food system—from soil to supper. Led by Family and Consumer Sciences Agent Cheralyn Berry, campers explored how fresh, local produce and meat make their way from nearby farms to the dinner table.
Throughout the week, campers visited several local farms that partner with N.C. Cooperative Extension, Durham County Center, including Briggs Community Garden, and Jireh Family Farm. They had the opportunity to meet small farmers, harvest fruits and vegetables with their own hands, and learn firsthand about sustainable agriculture and animal care.
In the kitchen, the learning continued. Under the guidance of Cheralyn, campers strengthened their culinary skills, focusing on proper knife techniques, safe cooking practices, and kitchen teamwork. Each day, they prepared dishes using the farm-fresh ingredients they gathered—culminating in a full scratch-made Mexican cuisine menu.
The week concluded with a celebratory Taco Bar on July 18, where families and community guests were invited to enjoy the campers’ creations. From homemade tortillas to fresh salsas, every dish reflected the youth’s hard work and growing confidence in the kitchen. Many of the campers were returning participants, and we were thrilled to welcome a number of new faces this year. The energy was high all week as friendships formed, skills were sharpened, and excitement about healthy, home-cooked meals took root.
We are proud of all our 4-Hers and can’t wait to see what next year’s camp brings!
