Financial Relief for Families

On March 31, 2020 Governor Cooper issued an executive order, which

  • instructs utility companies not to cut service during the Coronavirus crisis.
  • urges internet, phone, and cable companies, which the governor can’t order, to cease cutting off service during the Coronavirus crisis.
  • asks banks not to issue overdraft fees or other penalties during the crisis and delay all eviction proceedings, including those that began before the crisis.
  • encourages clerks of Superior Court not to restart eviction proceedings after the current hold, issued by Chief Justice Cheri Beasley, expires on April 17.

The Governor and the IRS previously waived the April 15 income tax filing deadline. Cooper and General Assembly leaders announced an agreement to defer interest on state income tax until July 15.
