Extension professionals, Extension advisory members, and community partners are invited to attend the National Urban Extension Leaders (NUEL) Southern & 1890’s Conference in Durham NC May 6-8. This is an incredibly impactful conference to build connections across the region and learn from each other as we explore innovative interdisciplinary approaches to work in our urban communities. The conference is geared for folks in urban and urban adjacent suburban areas. If you think you belong at this conference, then you are encouraged to register and attend, there is no requirement to attend. For more information about the conference and to register (regular registration rate ends April 15), go to https://go.ncsu.edu/2025southernand1890conference

The conference offers multiple concurrent sessions highlighting urban work from agriculture, local foods, 4-H, community development, FCS, and other practical content areas, such as partnership building and resource development. On the second day of the conference attendees can choose from 4 different mobile workshop tours(see the descriptions on the conference site).

The conference also features two remarkable keynote speakers. Delphine Sellars, Executive Director of Urban Community AgriNomics (UCAN) and a former urban County Extension Director will inspire us on Wednesday with her unique story of urban partnership and progress, reclaiming a North Carolina plantation for an innovative garden and community education space, which has been featured in Garden & Gun magazine.

Our closing speaker is Dr. Robert Dunn, a Distinguished Professor in Applied Ecology and the current Senior Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Programs at NC State University, who will help us make sense of our interconnectedness as humans in our urban and university environments. He manages the Public Science Lab at NCSU and is the author of several books including, A Natural History of the Future and Delicious: The Evolution of Flavor and How it Made us Human, with Monica Sanchez.
