Kids Voting Durham, a non-partisan organization that seeks to help young people understand and believe in the power they have as engaged citizens and informed voters, is are looking for youth, 13-23, as volunteers to help develop civic engagement materials for other youth including Kids Voting’s widely-used Election Guide. For Winter/Spring 2021, all service opportunities will be virtual, a mix of group activities at set times and/or independent work. Youth service volunteers will work individually or on a project team and should be interested in doing work in one or more of the following areas:

Research and writing: Researching and writing articles on topics such as minimum/living wage, reparations, that will be key in the upcoming Durham City Council election.

Graphic & visual design: Create information graphics for Instagram, print materials, and KVD social media.

WordPress/web: Help develop landing pages and structure for the 2021 Election Guide web version.

Video production & editing: Create civic video materials that help capture
youth opinions and information on issues and other elections for KVD’s IGTV site, video portions of the Candidate Guide, and civic curriculum for K-12 classrooms.

Administrative support: Word processing, data entry, and systems management to support Kids Voting activities

Youth service volunteers will:

  • Receive Service hours & leadership experience
  • Use your voice & ideas to make a difference
  • Have opportunity to interact with government officials and other Durham leaders
  • Be partnered with adult allies who are experienced in their field to serve as supports and sources of support and advice

Interested youth should:

  • Be comfortable working in groups and independently
  • Be willing to share opinions and ideas and to learn from each other
  • Be willing to commit 2+/week for 8 weeks or 20 hours total for a project
  • No previous experience is required
