Hello 4-H Families,

I’m sharing the following opportunities for summer programming some of our local partners have shared. Many of these are summer camps and other chances to develop new skills and opportunities to expand resumes and future college applications. We also have some state 4-H programming to share, and a few opportunities for adults.

Block Party flyer image

You are invited to attend Book Harvest’s upcoming Block Party on Saturday, July 17! From 1–4 p.m., Diamond View Park at American Tobacco Campus will be transformed into a citywide celebration of kids and books. Plus, we’re celebrating our 10th birthday!

The event is free to attend, and all children will receive a bag of age-appropriate, culturally-inclusive books. We are also giving away 10,000 special edition copies of The Word Collector (in English and Spanish). But that’s not all — the first 800 attendees will receive a free LocoPop!

We will be joined by local favorites including The Poetry Fox, Wool-E-Bull, Stormy, ZimZoom Photo Booth, The Scrap Exchange, Bouncing Bulldogs, and more! Plus, the African American Dance Ensemble will teach a community-wide dance class from 2:30-3:15 p.m.

The following is a message from Maya Grigorovich-Barsky from the America’s Promise Alliance. Her organization is offering $300 mini-grants as outlined in the following message:

Good morning State of Young People Leaders!

I hope you’re doing well! If you have not already, we invite you to apply to a NEW round of the Power of Youth Challenge, made possible through support from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, and share about the Challenge with your networks!

What’s NEW about this round of the Challenge?

  • What will be funded: while the previous round of the challenge was focused on funding projects related to racial equity, this round will fund all service project ideas that do not promote lobbying/specific legislation
  • How much: the mini-grant amount has increased: in this round, we will be offering $300 mini-grants
  • When: these summer service mini-grants are being offered June – August 2021 (applications must be submitted during that time, but projects need not be completed by the end of the summer)!

More details are included below!

One of our favorite programs here at N.C. Cooperative Extension is Kids Vote Durham, which helps teach citizenship skills and has an excellent internship and student leader program led by Carolyn Kreuger and overseen by our Community Outreach program manager Christa Gibson. She has the following opportunity for adult graphic designers she wanted to share:

Kids Voting Durham is seeking an experienced graphic designer to serve as an Adult Ally to its team of summer Youth Leadership Interns creating the 2021 KVD Election Guide (see previous examples on Instagram or Kids Voting Durham ).

The adult ally would help youth understand best design principles, provide them with feedback on their designs for the guide, and help them interpret hand drawings to digital (as needed) through short weekly Zoom meetings, asynchronous feedback or a combination (flexible according to designer availability) during the month of July and early August. The number of volunteer hours per week could be flexible based on your interest- from 1-8 hours/week.

This is a chance to work with an enthusiastic and civic-minded group of 13-23 year-olds who are eager to learn how to inspire civic engagement and knowledge through design! Contact cgibson@dconc.gov.

About This Event

Participants will receive Zoom links closer to the date of presentations. Registration is open for all ages (5-18). Join us as youth from all over NC get to come together and travel virtually across the world through a 3-day summer safari!

The schedule will be as follows with more details to come:

Day 1 – Zimbabwe: Safari & Conservation Projects

Day 2 – Animal Sanctuary (Mystery Animals – Tune In for Wildlife Reveal)

Day 3 – Sharks & Turtles

We’d love to have a great show of attendance from 4-H. Full details are still being worked out but the topics have been confirmed so we wanted to go ahead and release registration ASAP.

Our goal is to have at least 100 youth participate.
