During the months of June -August, Durham 4-H has been busy with fun summer camps and activities that allowed youth to make new friends and learn new skills.
In our CloverBud Camp, 4-Hers ranging from ages 6-8 learned about the effects of Wind and Rain by participating in fun science experiments and activities. We were able to partner with many organizations in the Durham Area including Duke Gardens , City Water, and NC Parks . These organizations graciously agreed to come and teach a lesson with our campers! At the end of the week we ended camp with a Wind Powered Boat Race.
In July, Durham County 4-H youth participated in our annual FarmtoFork Camp, an immersive experience designed to connect young people with the food system—from soil to supper. Led by Family and Consumer Sciences Agent, Cheralyn Berry, campers explored how fresh, local produce and meat make their way from nearby farms to the dinner table.
We also returned to Betsy Jeff Penn for our Overnight Camp with a total of 13 campers !! We even had an international exchange student participant who was able to attend their first overnight camp with us !
In August, 4-H youth learned skills in Woodworking and Sewing. We partnered with Bull City Woodworks for the second year! During Woodworking Camp, youth made 2 special projects there were able to take home and another project making garden beds that will be donated to a local community garden. They also learned how to properly use machinery and woodworking tools. In Sewing Camp, youth of different skill level, learned how to properly use a sewing machine and were able to make a bookbag they can use daily. We ended the week with a fashion for the parents to see what the 4-Hers had worked on all week.
We strive to provide fun but educational programs and summer camps that will hopefully have a lasting impact. We can't wait to see everyone next year !
