Collapse ▲July has been a very busy, very impactful month! It started off with a bang with the July 4th holiday weekend, and has been a roller-coaster ever since! Between 4-H Youth Programs and camps, the Sanford Farmers’ Market and client visits, the Lee County office has been staying busy.

Dr. Bill Stone welcomes Project Lift-Off
Week of July 21
The Lee County Office welcomed Project Lift-Off on Wednesday to have a career exploration camp. Campers chose which program they wanted to attend. They learned about healthy eating, electricity, gardening, scouting for insects and marketing.
Pam Kerley has been trying to catch-up after being away from a week, while also prepping for 4-H Congress next week! Whew!
Jared Butler has been mostly out in the field for classes and pond visits.
Amanda and Meredith had a jam-packed week! Monday we had “Girls in Ag” Camp with the Moore, Chatham, and Randolph County offices. We tag-teamed on Tuesday with Extension Master Gardener training about insects. On Wednesday we had fun with Project Lift-Off and we were able to have a farm-planning consult with a local farm. The Farm to ECE team from the Center for Environmental Farming Systems visited Lee County on Thursday and we got to visit all of our local daycare partners. Finally, Friday, we were able to catch our breath a little, before Saturday’s events: the Sanford Farmers’ Market and the last Extension Master Gardener training session.

Tree-climbing at 4-H Camp
Week of July 14
Pam – I have been on the back side of a camera all week as I followed 10 campers around Betsy Jeff Penn 4-H Camp in Reidsville, NC. Here are a few photos of the kids, including shots of Bill’s daughters.
Jared- This week I have been all over the state with a class in Rocky Mount and in Raleigh. On top of that I have been out in the community assisting with soil sampling, pond weed management and scouting corn. It’s been a great week as planning for the Lee Regional Fair is in full swing.
Bill- Had a great week sitting down with each of our Agents and recapping their program year as part of our end year appraisals. It’s rewarding to revisit their successes and think about how they’ll continue building on this progress in the coming years!
Meredith was busy gleaning with community volunteers. More than 70 pounds of blueberries were gleaned from a local blueberry patch for CUOC! It was also the first week of the Tuesday Farmers’ Market at the Senior Enrichment Center. Senior vouchers are accepted at this market once again!
Amanda spent a lot of time catching up on reporting and getting ready for her annual review! She was rewarded with attendance to the JCRA Color Field Day! She loves seeing colleagues in the Raleigh green industry. It was the Extension Master Gardener Volunteers’ outreach weekend at the Sanford Farmers’ Market and we had Avron Upchurch and Joe Spivey on-hand to teach our tent greenhouse activity.

Week of July 7
Pam Kerley – After concluding the first two summer fun camps of the year, I have spent this week planning for the upcoming events: Girls in Ag Day, Electric Camp, Betsy Jeff Penn Adventure Camp, Lee Regional Fair Events, and Youth Voice. I have had lots of desk work, so when I take the ten 4-H’ers to Betsy Jeff Penn 4-H camp in Reidsville next week, I will not worry about an undone “to do” list.
Bill Stone- It’s hard to believe it’s only July but we are already thinking about the Lee Regional Fair! We have begun planning for the Tobacco Looping and Tying Contests and the broiler chickens that the kids will be showing as part of the 4-H “Eggs to Legs” poultry project at the Fair should start hatching out next week.
Amanda and the Extension Master Gardeners had a good time sorting seed donations for the Lee County Seed Library! We had a lot of fun doing it, not only sorting but learning how everything is related to each other!
