The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) at the 2021 IPPE
This year’s IPPE was a little different, but AFIA was as busy as ever. They hosted their meetings virtually and shared important updates. We’ve gathered some highlights below.
“Feed Industry Can Expect Regulatory Shifts, New Priorities”
In late January, the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) hosted its annual Feed Education Program. They covered what the animal food industry can expect on food and worker safety from U.S. federal agencies in 2021. They also offered advice on improving biosecurity at feed facilities.

Sanitation Spectacular at IPPE 2021
AFIA’s Feed Education Program featured a talk from Richard Obermeyer, director of Feed Production for Aviagen North America on how biosecurity practices at feed facilities can impact food safety.
A good food safety program encompasses Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMP), a quality assurance program, and a food safety plan. It’s good to be aware of how contamination can occur in a facility and how to prevent it.
Changing the Narrative Around Animal Byproducts for Pet Food
During this year’s AFIA Pet Food Conference, Dr. Ansen Pond, head of food safety and quality assurance for Pilgrims/JBS USA, talked about the use of byproducts from animal processing in animal food.
Many companies want to increase their sustainability while continuing to provide high-quality products. According to Pond, the use of rendered ingredients and other byproducts can provide livestock, poultry and pets with much-needed nutrients, all while reducing waste from human food processing.

Bentoli, Inc. Shares Mycotoxin Content on LinkedIn
With recent U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) animal food recalls due to elevated aflatoxin levels, there’s a lot of information being released on different ways to mitigate animal food hazards in facilities and at home.
Bentoli, Inc. has provided their followers with graphics that describe how mycotoxins can impact different species of animals, including clinical symptoms of mycotoxin exposure.

Cargill Opens New Facility in Ohio
Cargill recently opened a new premix facility in Lewisburg, Ohio. The new facility was designed with nutrient precision, food safety, and novel technology in mind. Their focus is on using automation for precision formulation and production, and traceability.
