	Growing and Marketing Local Foods October 17th, 2007 @ 12:00 PM - November 1st, 2007 @ 3:00 PM Roxboro, NC
	“There has been a growing interest among farmers, consumers, and grocery chains to promote the growing and marketing of local foods. Farmers who grow and market locally, provide a fresher product to the consumer, as compared with food that is grown in distant areas and shipped in”, according to Carl Cantaluppi, Area Horticulture Agent in Granville and Person Counties, with the NC Cooperative Extension Service. To address this topic of growing and marketing local foods, Cantaluppi, along with Mike Lanier, Area Agribusiness Agent who also works with NC Cooperative Extension, based in Orange County, teamed up to plan a series of workshops. The series is called “Growing and Marketing Local Foods” and all will be held at the Person County Extension Office, 304 S. Morgan Street in Roxboro. The first session will be on October 17 from 12 Noon to 3 P.M. Lunch will be served at 12 Noon and will feature pasture-raised chicken, grown by Bailey Newton of Triple B Farms in Bullock, NC. From 1-3 P.M. there will be a panel discussion that will include Mr. Alex Rilko, Southern Region Produce Purchasing Team Leader, with Whole Foods, Duluth, GA. His topic will be “Buying locally to promote the local food concept.” Other panel members will include Dan Thomas, Whole Foods Produce Manager in Chapel Hill, and Paul Griswold, Fresh Foods Merchandiser with Weaver Street Market in Chapel Hill. The second session will be on October 24 from 10 A.M. to 12 Noon. The topic will be “How the energy outlook is raising the stakes for local and organic food production” by Mike Lanier. The third session will be on October 31 from 1-3 P.M. The topic will be “Staggered planting and season extension techniques” by Steve Moore, Center for Environmental Farming Systems, Goldsboro, NC. The fourth session will be on November 7 from 1-3 P.M. The topic will be “Organic vegetable production in North Carolina” by Alex Hitt, Peregrine Farms in Graham, NC. The fifth and last session will be on November 14 from 1-3 P.M. The topic will be “Starting and managing your produce enterprise: marketing, post-harvest handling, insect and disease identification and control, by Carl Cantaluppi The cost for the entire series is $25.00 per person. This includes lunch during the first session and a notebook with workshop materials. No discounts for those who don’t fully participate. Pre-registration is required to guarantee you a seat.
